Advertisements are everywhere, on TV, radio, streaming services, magazines, and even the movie theatre, there is no getting away from it. It is no wonder why retail spending continues to increase every year; we love buying products. According to a market research firm, Yankelovich, we see as many as 5,000 ads a day, and while we may not notice them all, there are many ways that ad agencies are continuing to get us to spend and spend.
Feeding the American Greed
Any time you see an ad that is part of the seven deadly sins, which include greed, lust, sloth, envy, gluttony, wrath, and pride, buyer beware, advertising are taking advantage of you. There is no reason we need to get fat on a $9.99 all you can eat buffet, but I can say I am tempted whenever I see it, even though I know the quality of food is terrible.
Making Us Get Emotional
If you are emotional after seeing an ad, then you are victim of advertisers pressing your emotional hot buttons, which include Trust, Pleasure, Hope, and Excitement. Jennifer Lopez could sell me just about anything, as there is a trust factor for a celebrity that I have never met before.
Feeling Left Out
If you are not standing in line for the new iPhone 12, then you could be missing out on the greatest thing, well, since the last one. Advertisers like to make us feel like we are missing out on something if we do not have their item, or not waiting in line at midnight to purchase on its release. After all, everyone else is doing it.
I Have Never Seen So Many Hot Fast-Food Workers
If you think you must have been in the wrong lines at Taco Bell, you are not the only one. Advertisers use attractive people to push their products, and when it comes to fast-food, those serving and eating, are fit, so it makes me think I can still eat that and be fit. The truth is, if you saw what it did to you if ate enough of it, you would not want it.
Repetition is Key
The most annoying commercials stick in your head, allowing you to remember that product if you are in need. Locally we have the 1-800-CALL-SAM commercials, played over and over, during sports games (and are a sponsor), so although I could not name many lawyers, if I ever needed one, I now know the name and number.
